Compleation: The Final Five
Dropping down the stone chute that leads from the top of the pass into a broad, Pamir-like landscape.

Tian Shan, April

Pitched up for the second night; higher would've been better, but here I had access to water dripping from a frozen cascade on the other side of the river.

Foxhole overlooking Bogda Feng, the 5300+m mountain in the background. The Yarmalik hills are riddled with fortifications dating back to the Sino-Soviet tensions of the 1960s.

The Yarmalik Tunnels
Even as I clicked the shutter, I realised this wild pig was charging me. Oh fuck! I adopted a Lou Ferrigno Hulk-style pose and growled loudly. The pig skidded to a halt; Mexican standoff. We watched each other warily for about 30 seconds, then both backed away, made our excuses and left...

When pigs attack!
Once you get past the desert badlands into the river valleys, you hit the meadows and deciduous woodland where the ethnic Kazakhs hole up during the winter.
Sat 13th Oct 2007 to Sun 14th Oct 2007
The last bike trip of 2007...?

Of course, this is not untouched wilderness; during the brief summer, Kazakh herders move their tents up into the valleys and graze their livestock on the high pastures. While dropping off the ridge, I found this solitary prayer flag flapping wildly in the breeze. Kazakhs are Muslims, so I'm not sure who placed it here...didn't bring me much luck, though, as I slipped shortly after seeing it, banging up my thigh and wrist quite badly.

Riding the mountains down, white yurts in the distance.
Wed 22nd Aug 2007 to Fri 24th Aug 2007
Over the hills to Korla.
I woke up to thick mist on the fourth day, and ended up having to wait for it to clear to get some idea of where I was.

Tien Shan Recce III

This peak, sitting astride the pass, would be an easy bag with snow gear, and will definitely be seeing a return visit.
Sat 30th Jun 2007 to Thu 5th Jul 2007
Tien Shan Recce II
On the first two days I tried following the main river upstream through a narrow gorge. I made it a bit further than here, then got stuck at one crossing - knocked off my feet by the force of the flow and bashing up my legs, I decided it was time to adopt a different approach.

Trek again honoured their warranty scheme, and gave me a Klein Attitude. Initially, less than convinced about its durability, I just used it as a hacker and singlespeed. However, bits started migrating across from the P7 as it quickly became clear that the Attitude, for all its design niggles, was a beautiful ride. I sold the P7 frame in an attempt to rationalise the number of bikes cluttering up the flat.
